Studio visit with Roanna Tella for I AM & … NOTHING ELSE;
An exhibition in celebration of International Women’s month featuring five visionary female artists from Nigeria and South Africa. The exhibition draws inspiration from the book “Women who Run with the Wolves: Myths and stories of the Wild Woman Archetype” by psychoanalyst, author, and poet Clarissa Pinkola Estes.
“Art has a lot of roles to play in the shaping and changing the narrative of African women, it can be a documentative process, history and education for the generation to come ” – Roanna Tella.
Roanna Tella is a visual artist living and working in Lagos. She received her bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos, where she majored in painting.
Roanna Tella creates a universe that explores how women respond to various emotional states, mental resilience, and coping mechanisms. Incorporating hand-sewn narrative texts with thread serves as a meditative practice for tracing emotions and triggers. Her compositions blur the boundaries between an alternate reality by situating herself in evasive dreamscapes where she gets to rest idly in tranquility, unperturbed by external expectations and her present reality, and chaos.
